Review: Let Me Sleep, Sheep!

Amos can’t sleep.

He’s counting fluffy white sheep, the perfect remedy, until suddenly, two of those sheep land in his bedroom.

And they are not pleased that Amos has counted them away from what they were doing.

The sheep agree to let Amos keep counting, but they have conditions: a fence, drinks, a finish line, a party.

Poor Amos is getting sleepy and he’s tired of the sheep’s crazy demands, but the sheep won’t let him sleep until everything is perfect. Will Amos ever get to sleep?

Let Me Sleep, Sheep! is a delightful picture book by two amazing Australian creators that turns the classic ‘counting sheep’ story on its head. Filled with fun and humour, it’s a magical journey from the first sheep to the last.

It’s also infused with some fabulous irony, which is sure to be spotted by all parents who’ve experienced the battle of bedtime. As the sheep become more and more demanding, and create even more rules Amos must follow to ensure the sheep counting event is perfect, Amos experiences what every tired adult feels when they are trying to get a little person to go to sleep.

It’s a ‘taste of your own medicine’ tale, and it’s hilarious!

The super talented Meg McKinlay is known for bringing fresh, meaningful and hilarious tales to life, and Let Me Sleep, Sheep! is no different. Paired with Leila Rudge’s divine illustrations, the book is stunning and engaging — a visual feast to explore! I simply adored the sheep and their distinct visual personalities — so much sass, so much self-assurance.

A delightful picture book from two of Australia’s picture book masters, Let Me Sleep, Sheep! is sure to become a classic.
