Review: Extraordinary

A heartwarming exploration of the beauty around us, from natural environments to the simplest of human actions including looking, listening and spending time with loved ones.

Sometimes what seems ordinary is actually more; Extraordinary! takes readers on a journey delving deep into what we may sometimes take for granted and even further into our own imaginations.

Floating through days, nights and seasons the story questions and conveys feelings from common life scenarios; reading in a cosy living room on a rainy day, spotting a shooting star, toasting marshmallows, harvesting homegrown food, dancing in the snow and more.

Flowing, rhyming text, refreshing illustrations and typography which glides like a soft breeze combine to set the scene wondrously. I love how Extraordinary! sparked memories and took me to times and places in my life. It was a joy to share it with my children, in each scenario we discussed memories and possibilities of similar moments and events.

Katie Wilson’s illustrations with watercolour textures and a handcrafted feel are a perfect fit for Penny Harrison’s gentle enchanting words. I adore the cover art with speckles of spot varnish glimmering amongst the leaves in a scene showing a child and a dog walking in the forest.

Penny Harrison is a KBR contributor and the author of other fabulous books including Emily Green’s Garden, Bronte: Me and My Boots and The Art Garden. Katie Wilson is a New Zealand based illustrator, who has illustrated other books including Jane Austen (Little People, Big Dreams).
