Review: Honour Among Ghosts

An out-of-this-world mystery, unlikely allies and a winter that just won’t quit.

Brush up on your sleuthing skills, because you’re going to need them!

Penny’s dad has been accused of a crime he didn’t commit. He’s been thrown in jail, and Penny has lost her job as maid in the Magistrate’s house.

With her best friend Colm (who also happens to be the Magistrate’s son), the town scribe’s apprentice, Mab, and Niclas the traveller, she starts to investigate the situation. If her dad didn’t steal the Magistrate’s gold cup, she needs to find out who did.

But when the clues lead nowhere and then more people are accused of crimes they swear they didn’t commit, Penny and her new sleuth crew just don’t know what to do.

How is it possible that things can just disappear from one place and end up in another? Something fishy is happening in Lower Rudmere, and with a fuming Magistrate imposing new rules and curfews on the town, finding the truth becomes a risky and mighty challenging adventure.

Honour Among Ghosts is a fast-paced and action-packed middle-grade adventure. There’s twists and turns throughout the story, with the mystery building layer by layer until a big reveal that I didn’t see coming one little bit. Oh so satisfying!

The range of characters in the novel is deliciously wide. Good, bad, kind, grumpy, loyal, quirky and misunderstood. There are many times when you’ll see both the good and bad in a character, which is a wonderful and thought-provoking reflection on reality.

I also adore the world Williams has brought to life. It’s a world close to ours, but not quite. There is magic here, and it’s wondrous.

If you’ve read Williams’ novel Her Perilous Mansion, you might recognise the name Lower Rudmere. That’s because Williams has set Honour Among Ghosts in the same general location. Other than this connection, the books are stand-alones. The characters are different and the stories don’t overlap. But it’s such a magical thing. Williams has created a whole world and he continues to explore different aspects of it through his work.

If you like adventures and mysteries with a sprinkle of magic, this one is definitely for you.
