Review: Meet Mim

Dive down to the world of the sandy seabed and meet one of the ocean’s masters of disguise!

Meet Mim is one of those immersive picture books that children and their adults will return to over and over.

It’s the story of Mim, a Mimic Octopus who turns herself inside out and upside down to trick others and, it would seem, to delight herself.

Mim is a seahorse, a feather star, a stingray, a sea snake – you name it, if it lives in the ocean, it seems that she is willing to try it on as camouflage!

This book is totally captivating from beginning to end. It has a gorgeous cast of characters who never steal the limelight (except perhaps for that one stripy fish making faces at its own reflection in a water bubble. Oh, and that other one splashing its tail upon re-entering the water, just because it can)…

The illustrations are amazing and although I’ve not met an octopus in person to make the comparison, it would seem that they’re incredibly life-like; beautifully rendered, cunningly textured and very cleverly shaped and placed in each double spread.

The conversational tone and fun use of the language, which reads as a guessing game, is perfect for younger readers and keeps the pages turning with full investment in the outcome.

A truly masterful subject for a masterfully true picture book, Meet Mim will be at home in the classroom, on holidays or as a read-aloud-snuggled-up-in-bed treat.

Pop it onto your list for gift-giving. It’s a delight.
