Review: Fly, Mama, Fly!

This divine board book celebrates award-winning author/illustrator Anna McGregors’ fresh and fun style.

It offers captivating characters, a tiny voice with big eyes that you want to just reach into the book and cuddle, and a very, very special and different presentation:

This book sits on a shelf like all other books, but when you open it up, the world tilts sideways.

A gorgeous and endearing surprise that makes you smile at each page turn – especially the one where you must again turn the book ‘right way up’ to see Mama’s impressive wing-span.

Gentle rhyme spoken in the voice of this flying fox pup who is cute beyond what should ever be allowed in a picture book, ensure that Fly, Mama, Fly! will be enjoyed by small and bigger children in turn.

A friendly night sky in an alluring shade of purple, highlights the tiny neon flashes of pink and orange in these engaging illustrations. Large eyes cleverly moving from open to shut, convey so much character and family connection as Mama and child fly through the Australian landscape.

The joyous illustrations and seemingly simple continuity of style belie a very clever and deliberate design and structure that makes this book a joy to read - every time.

There’s SO much to love in this story about endangered grey-headed flying foxes, not least of which is that 5% of all sales go to conservation efforts for these critters.

A delight.
