Review: Short Stories

I wasn’t expecting to be so charmed by this unassuming-looking book – but it is an absolute hoot.

Step into a world of micro-tales that pack a mighty punch of humour!

Italian creative Siliva Borando has made a brilliantly funny book of strange animal pairings that provide some hilarious and unexpected moments.

Deceptively simple, with lush colour and strong line work, the book’s endearing characters and unconventional ideas made me laugh out loud.

Each double spread has a different, bold background colour and spreads beyond the two pages with simple line work, so that the book feels expansive – like it could actually wander off into the distance. Bold colours with outlines and expressive eyes on all the creatures we meet, ensure that the pictures are easy to read.

Concise wording (some of these stories are just three pages long, after all!) means that – maybe ironically – there are plenty of opportunities to ‘live into’ the stories and shake your head in wonder.

I think the major joy of this work for me, is the variety of joke telling styles. Subtlety sits alongside bop-you-over-the-head humour. It’s almost a roller coaster in a picture book.

Definitely not for squeamish parents.

And definitely for the young at heart who enjoy a good laugh.

A cracker.
