Review: Golden

Golden is a debut novel by Jade Timms, shortlisted for the Text Prize.

It’s a book full of colour and beauty; a salute to family, friends and friendships.

Deep emotive prose takes the reader on a journey through sadness, grief, recovery, reinvention and love.

There is a split in Eddie’s family.

Her mother lives alone elsewhere. Elder sister Viv has been swallowed by grief and also lives alone.

Somehow Eddie has alienated her friends and become socially inept.

She has distanced herself from her twin brother, Pat, and is hostile to George, the girl she works with at the juice bar.

She is resentful and angry and at times aggressive towards people who were once close to her.

Initially, we don’t discover the reasons for Eddie’s negative approach to everyone and everything.

Jade Timms employs a riveting and individual process to present the reasons for Eddie’s behaviour, through the slow peeling back of information that allows the reader into her background experiences and personal life.

Howl walks into her life at a time when she feels alone and wallowing in memories and feelings of loss and guilt which she can’t overcome.

He is attracted to the mystery she exudes and is determined to break through her withdrawn attitude.

This beautiful story has many moving and expansive themes.

Issues addressed include the importance of family unity, forgiveness, the absolute necessity of being able to talk about and solve personal problems, learning both sides of a story, forgiving yourself and others, loving, and allowing yourself to be loved.

Not to be missed!
