I studied dance for many years including flamenco and was teaching myself to play the castanets.
2. What is your nickname?
Y-von. I guess since my name is spelt with a ‘Y’ instead of an ‘E’.
3. What is your greatest fear?
I’d say snakes, as I’m spending more time in the Blue Mountains bush.
4. Describe your writing style in 10 words.
Whimsical, often with a dash of humour, wordplay and rhyme.
5. Tell us five positive words that describe you as a writer.
Curious, thoughtful, poetic, visual, playful.
6. What book character would you be, and why?
Dr Dolittle, because I love languages and animals, and wouldn’t it be fascinating and helpful, to be able to communicate with so many different species.
7. If you could time travel, what year would you go to and why?
Medieval period. I’m fascinated by castles, knights and illuminated manuscripts. I’ve tried my hand at illuminated lettering with gold leaf – such a beautiful literary artform.
8. What would your 10-year-old self say to you now?
‘I’m glad you kept up your drawing and art and still love books – fantastic that you’re able to combine them creatively!’
9. Who is your greatest influence?
My parents. They always encouraged and opened up opportunities for creativity and growth.
10. What/who made you start writing?
Great English, History, Foreign Language and Art teachers, and my kids. They inspired a love of words, language, cultures and creativity, which inform my writing and art today.
11. What is your favourite word and why?
Right now, I have a favourite phrase, which is actually French: ‘entre chien et loup’. It means ‘between the dog and the wolf’ and refers to that magical time of ‘dusk’. The French phrase also holds an enticing story, just within those four words.
12. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, what would it be?
The Bible. It sustains and encourages, guides and enlightens, brings comfort and peace. I discover and learn something different and valuable, each time I open it up.
