Review: John Farnham

“You’re the voice, try and understand…”

Do you remember taking the time to bravely write your name inside the front cover of your Little Golden Book? There is something rather special about seeing that familiar golden spine and knowing you are about to open a book that might become a favourite.

This Little Golden Book biography celebrates an Australian music legend, John Farnham, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. In fact, I found myself singing along as I read!

The realistic image of John on the front cover immediately sets the scene for this non-fiction text. And of course, there is that wonderfully traditional Little Golden Book size and binding that makes these books instantly recognisable. This biography is part of a series introducing young readers to the lives and achievements of well-known people.

The book takes readers through the highs and lows of John Peter Farnham’s life, from his passion for singing in school to his incredibly successful career. The facts are presented in a way that is accessible for younger readers while still providing plenty of interesting information for older readers too.

And the illustrations are a delight. They capture the different eras of John’s life and provide a wonderful springboard for talking about history and how life changes over time.

I would encourage you to share this book and enjoy John Farnham’s music. Listen to some of his songs, talk about which ones you know and discover why his music has remained so loved by Australians. You might even find yourself having a little singalong!

In the classroom, this biography could spark investigations into passions and talents, the arts, music, musical instruments, timelines, resilience and fame. It could also lead to rich conversations about how a person’s interests, choices and determination can shape their life.

At home, it is a wonderful opportunity to share a piece of Australian cultural history while introducing children to a musician they may not yet know.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I’m a John Farnham fan, so perhaps I was always going to be a little biased!

Have you got a Little Golden Book lover at home or in your classroom? Grab this one, turn up the music and let John Farnham’s story be the beginning of a very memorable reading conversation.
