Review: Gallop! and Kick!

Each page of this book features an animal – a horse, cat, turtle, amongst others - that move as you turn the page. The animation in the book uses Scanimation technology invented by the author, Rufus Butler Seder. The images are black and white and literally move.

The fascinating pictures are surrounded by eye-catchingingly colourful words, using some great rhymes and alliteration to draw in young readers and parents alike. It is mesmerising... at least for the first 100 times you read it!

As with all great young reader books there are many learning opportunities here – talking through the sounds the animals make, the variety of ways in which they move and where they live. This is one of the books that helped my little boy fall in love with books as it’s such a fun read. Despite having it for well over a year he goes back to it at least every few days.

As with its predecessor, Gallop!, each page of this book features an animated page using the Scanimation technology. This time around it’s all about movement and playing sport – kicking a ball, riding a bike, swimming. As you turn each page the black and white pictures featuring a child move as if he were participating in the activity. The rhymes used throughout draw out the sense of fun and adventure associated with the pictures.

The pictures and the rhyme are just as enthralling as with its predecessor and is loved by my nieces and nephew (eight, six and four) just as much as by my two-year-old.
