Review: The Good Girls

When we last saw Julie, Ava, Parker, Mackenzie and Caitlin, they were under suspicion for the murders of Nolan Hotchkiss and Mr Granger, their Film Studies teacher. This book picks up right where The Perfectionists left off (see review here).

Of course the girls know they didn't commit the murders, but it's becoming increasingly clear that someone must be framing them. After all, they each named somebody they wished was dead, and now the first two have been taken care of. When Parker's pick, Ashley Ferguson, goes missing, they all suspect she's another victim. Which means there's only Ava's stepmother Leslie and Mackenzie's ex-bestfriend Claire to go.

If only the murders were all they had to worry about. Julie's mother is making her life a living hell with her hoarding addiction. Ava's boyfriend has been arrested. Mackenzie can't move on from Blake, the boy she's loved forever but who betrayed her in a way that she can never forgive. Caitlin has broken up with her boyfriend of years and is now going out with his brother (and that's awkward for everyone). And then there's Parker. Her therapist turned out to be a stalker and now she seems to be losing chunks of time, unable to remember what she's been doing or where she's been.

With all that's going on, the girls can only trust each other … or can they?

Once again, Sara Shepard doesn't disappoint. Her writing is taut, compelling and utterly addictive. She creates convincing characters that readers can identify with, no matter how dramatic the events they're involved in. This is a book to lose yourself in over a weekend. Just make sure you won't be interrupted when you get near the end — the twist in the tale is one to savour!
