Review: Unfolding Journeys: Following the Great Wall and Secrets of the Nile

Prepare yourself for a visual and information packed journey through Egypt and China in these fantastic new offerings from Lonely Planet Kids. They are both part of the Unfolding Journeys series, a unique series of fold out fact books.

Each book contains a beautifully illustrated pull-out wall-chart nearly two metres long with information galore in around 50 bite sized, non-threatening chunks that kids can explore at their leisure. The reverse side of the chart contains more detailed information on each of the items presented, for those that want to explore further.

I love that the short, simple facts are written in a fun and friendly way with a good range of the serious, interesting, fun and quirky.

If you were exploring the Secrets of the Nile, you might see if you recognise the house used in a James Bond film. Or would you like to know where the world’s oldest map came from? Are there really mummified crocodiles? Why are there whale bones in the desert? And what is a Hoopoe bird? The answers to all these and more can be gleaned by poring over these pages!

Following the Great Wall takes you on a journey along the longest structure ever made by man. Along the way you can find out where it looks like the mountains are on fire and where there are a thousand rainbows made of rock. Where is the largest underground art gallery in the world? And what is a Chinese jumping mouse?

The illustrations for both books have been thoughtfully designed to capture the essence of the region they are describing. Starkoff’s illustrations for Secrets of the Nile capture the colour palate of Egypt with a base of bright yellows layered with browns blues and greens. Ngai’s illustrations for Following the Great Wall are detailed and engaging, with a distinctly Chinese style that gives them authenticity.

This series would be a wonderful classroom resource or great for any curious kids at home. The books have something for everyone with information ranging from historical events, significant artefacts and famous monuments, to culture and landscape and random fun facts!

The Unfolding Journeys series also contains Amazon Adventure and Rocky Mountain Explorer, both published in 2016.
