Review: Illumanatomy

Carnovsky's previous book Illuminature wowed readers and so will their new book Illumanatomy. This book is an engaging and educational look at the anatomy of the human body.

Illumanatomy's illustrations may look busy with pink, yellow and green images and lines that look complex to read. However, viewing the book using the tri-coloured lenses turns what was out of focus, into something clear and enlightening.

The lenses make this book a unique experience. When looking through the red lens readers discover the body's skeleton, the green lens the muscles and the blue lens shows organs and blood vessels.

Illumanatomy's contents will help you explore the body from head to toe. Each section is divided into three parts: the body, the x-ray room and the anatomy room. Readers use the lenses to view the images from the body and x-ray room pages. In the anatomy room the double page spread of black and white labelled diagrams reveal more information about each topic. Readers will discover lots of facts inside the covers of Illumanatomy, including the number of bones that form the skull.

The information provided in Illumanatomy is specific and concise. The vocabulary includes scientific words but the author Kate Davies has used language that is easy-to-read. When selecting books for children one must check the age appropriateness of the vocabulary and the content. One section of the book explores how a baby grows including information about the reproductive organs along with a diagram of the organs without the body's outline. For this topic when readers use the coloured lenses in the x-ray room they can view the skeleton, abdominal muscles and the baby.

The illustration style of Carnovsky is unique and entertaining. The illustrations turn bland anatomy diagrams into something astonishing.

Please note like the previous Carnovsky book, Illuminature, when using the blue lens the images of the organs and blood vessels are quite dark.

Illumanatomy is a glorious book that will reveal lots of interesting information about the human body.
