Review: Emma Memma: Auslan Alphabet

Learn the Auslan alphabet from A-Z with Emma Memma and Elvin Melvin in this beautifully presented fingerspelling picture book.

On each page you will find a clear photo of Emma or Elvin signing a letter of the Auslan alphabet, along with an illustration of the correct finger position.

In addition, there is a helpful guide to some everyday Auslan words and phrases such as Hello, My Name and Thank You. At the back of the book is a QR code linking to the Auslan videos for all of Emma Memma’s books.

The delightfully designed book is illuminated by hard-of-hearing illustrator and graphic designer Amy Josephine Wright. Her joyful images beautifully compliment the photographs in the book.  Amy has also designed Auslan ABC flashcards which would be a useful companion to the Emma Memma: Auslan Alphabet.

This book is perfect for all ages to learn how to communicate with Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities. I shared it with my family members aged 4-84 and they all enjoyed learning how to sign their names and some basic words and greetings.

Emma Memma: Auslan Alphabet is an important and accessible book, perfect for anyone beginning their journey to learning Auslan. It is highly recommended for both the home and the classroom as a resource to inspire knowledge and communication.
